Part 1 | The Youth Burnout Games
The Never-Ending Shift
3:17 AM. Riley Quinn sat hunched in his tiny Austin studio apartment, eyes bloodshot, hoodie stained with energy drink spills. His laptop screen was the only light source in the room.
He leaned back for just five seconds to breathe.
Immediately, the holographic virtual office flashed red:
“REST DETECTED. -$450 BONUS. Focus enhancer dose increased.”
Riley panicked and slammed back into position, fingers flying across the keyboard.
The Corporate Dream
Three years ago, Riley believed the hustle would set him free. Remote job. Flexible hours. “Make an impact.”
Now he worked 18–20 hours a day for a faceless startup, drowning in student debt, surviving on caffeine and fear.
The Handler
On the screen, Elena Voss — his elite corporate handler — appeared with her perfect smile and cold eyes.
“Great hustle, Riley! Investors love your metrics. But remember: one hour off equals double penalty. Keep the streak alive.”
The Live Entertainment
Riley opened the “Investor Live” link. Hundreds of wealthy executives were watching his productivity dashboard like a reality show.
Comments rolled in:
“Love the eye twitch!”
“Increase the dose — better numbers!”
His exhaustion was their entertainment.
The Breaking Point
Riley stared directly into his webcam, voice cracking:
“I can’t keep doing this…”
Elena smiled sweetly:
“Day 1 streak maintained. Tomorrow we push for 22 hours. Don’t break the game.”
TO BE CONTINUED IN PART 2…
In the Youth Burnout Games, there are no days off.
Only the next shift.
